Inspirational YOU speaker – Dr Nicola Rollock – Saturday 30th June 2012

Dr Nicola Rollock will be joining our ‘leading ladies: Never give up’ panel as part of our ‘The art of winning’ summer conference at Birkbeck, University of London.

Dr Nicola Rollock has worked as an academic for over 14 years, specialising in examining and challenging the manifestation of race inequities within British society. She is probably best known for her recent research, carried out with colleagues at the Institute of Education University of London The Educational Strategies of the Black middle classes which received widespread coverage in the press, and her seminal report The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry 10 Years On the conclusions of which were debated in Parliament.

Previously, Dr Rollock was Head of Education for the highly respected race equality charity The Runnymede Trust where her work included designing classroom resources and training programmes to support teachers in their understanding of race, racism and cultural diversity.

Dr Rollock has been an advisor to a number of government organisations and recently gave evidence in Parliament to the Liberal Democrats Race Equality Taskforce. She has written widely both for academic and mainstream audiences with articles in The Guardian, The Voice Newspaper and The Evening Standard. She is a current member of the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust’s Racial Justice Committee and has recently become Vice Chair of Barbados Forward Thinkers, a voluntary organisation.
