What does natural mean in 2017? A natural hair and wellbeing discussion

The Village Centre, Willington Road, SW9

Sandra Brown-Pinnock, an award-winning entrepreneur and owner of Xsandy’s – the UK’s premium hair extensions brand and retail chain, is raising the bar within the (Afro) hair and beauty world.  As the only female, African-Caribbean (hair and beauty) retailer in South East London, Sandra uses business as a tool to empower and motivate others within the community to embrace entrepreneurship.

Having worked in mental health care (public sector) for over 15 years, Sandra then moved into the private sector and opened a social care organisation to facilitate the rehabilitation of mental health patients back into society. During the course of eight years managing eleven homes, Sandra’s role was instrumental as consultant to senior commissioners and placement officers, enabling them to successfully assist thousands of “difficult to place clients” towards complete independent living.

In 2008 Sandra set her eyes on the lucrative hair industry, and embarked on a new journey manufacturing a successful line of hair extensions. Motivated by the lack of product knowledge and customer service provided in hair stores, the former psychiatric nurse-turned business woman opened her first retail store in Lewisham Shopping Centre in June 2015. A year later, Xsandy’s opened a second store in Peckham on bustling Rye Lane, the SE latest area set for regeneration developments

Driven by her vision to empower other Black-owned businesses within the market, Sandra stocks an expanding range of independent UK product lines including Shea Decadence London, Premae, Afrocenchix and Shear and Shine (the UK’s first black grooming range). Having recently won Business Start-Up of the Year (C.Hub Awards 2016) and shortlisted for a Precious Award – the UK’s leading awards ceremony for women of colour, Sandra hopes that through leadership, innovation and sharing her experience that others will be encouraged to embark on an entrepreneurial journey; thus positively impacting the economic and social status of the community at large.

What does natural mean in 2017? – A natural hair and wellbeing discussion

Lekia1

Lekia Lée, a former broadcast journalist, natural hair mentor, beauty advocate and positive image activist, is the founder of Project Embrace, a social enterprise creating and promoting positive images of Afro textured hair with their newly-launched billboard campaign. Her company also organises empowerment workshops for mothers and daughters to inspire unconditional self-love and to teach practical ways to care for natural afro textured hair. Their ‘emPOWERDRESSING’  range feature Tshirts and other merchandise with positive affirmation slogans.

Project Embrace by challenging the narrow perception of beautiful hair, aims to encourage diversity in the beauty and fashion industry and society in general.

Lekia2

According to Lekia, research has shown that dissatisfaction with personal looks is linked to unhealthy wellbeing and low self-esteem; “hence her strapline – I am Enough. She says: “I hope to encourage women and girls to use their beauty as a source of empowerment and not a source of anxiety. When you feel empowered you can achieve anything. It is all about demanding equality and the right to express your authentic beauty.  The problem is not that we appreciate beauty, but that the definition of beauty is narrow.”

The up-and-coming British R&B singer @rayblk will be joining our private invite-only Inspirational YOU.

Ray is the youngest of three children, Ray studied English Literature at west London’s Brunel University before briefly working in PR, and making music during her evenings and weekends. For six months, she didn’t sleep for more than five hours a night. In the past year, though, her hard work has begun to reap rewards: in December, the sultry “5050” was playlisted by BBC @bbc1xtra and @rinsestagram and since then she’s racked up over a million @SoundCloud plays, made her TV debut on BBC2’s Later… With JoolsHolland, and been nominated for a MOBO award for Best Newcomer.

The London singer and rapper was recently named as the winner of BBC Music Sound of 2017.

Delivering the brash honesty of rap music, with her unique blend of soul and R&B spirit, Ray BLK weaves between genre boundaries borrowing the elements she requires to reach her goals. “I feel proud when my music connects with people,” says the 23-year-old from Catford, South London.

Ray, who has collaborated with grime star @stormzyofficial on My Hood, her tribute to Catford, south London, draws from the likes of MissyElliott and Timbaland’s textured rap, along with R&B and pop. “I’m particularly proud to be a part of this year’s list, as it’s full of so much talent, some of whom are independent artists like myself,” she added, “which I really hope inspires the next generation of artists.”

Dawn Butler

MP for Brent Central

Tuesday 28th February 2017

Leadership, progression and success at the top – Raising the bar

House of Commons

Dawn Butler was born to immigrants from Jamaica, and is one of six children. She worked on a market stall and in a bakery in her youth but started her career as a computer programmer/systems analyst. She later became a civil servant, as manager in the employment service and then a trade unionist.  Her desire to enter politics came from a deep rooted commitment to address inequality.

Elected as the Member of Parliament for Brent South on 5 May 2005 Dawn’s maiden speech described her constituency as a “shining example of integration at its best”. Dawn became the first elected African-Caribbean woman to become a Government Minister in the UK.

Dawn ran a hugely successful campaign in 2015 and won Brent Central with a majority of nearly 20,000; giving the largest vote swing in Britain.

Dawn has always been a passionate campaigner for young people; she is an Honorary Vice President of the British Youth Council, was formerly Chair of the APPG on Youth Affairs, a member of the Children & Families Select Committee and Vice Chair of the Labour Party with responsibility for Youth. Her work on youth led to Dawn being appointed as the Minister for Young Citizens & Youth Engagement at the Cabinet Office by Gordon Brown. This made Dawn the first ever African-Caribbean woman to serve in a British Government.

A natural campaigner, since returning to Parliament Dawn has taken on the ‘Big 6’ energy companies over the excessive cost of pre-payment meters. She has held a Westminster Hall debate, launched a national petition and secured a commitment from the Prime Minister to look at this issue.

Dawn is the former Shadow Minister for Diverse Communities and was recently voted the People’s Choice Labour Party MP of the Year.

Chi-chi Nwanoku MBE

Founder, Artistic & Executive Director Chineke!, Principal double bassist,

Prof Royal Academy of Music, Broadcaster, Writer & Mentor

Tuesday 28th February 2017

Leadership, progression and success at the top – Raising the bar

House of Commons

An ex-sprinter and half the size of her double bass, Chi-chi Nwanoku has gained a reputation as one of the finest exponents of her instrument today.

The eldest of 5 children from Nigerian and Irish parents, she was 7 years old when she discovered the piano at a neighbour’s, who taught her to play a 12-bar blues. She returned to their house daily until the neighbour got so fed up they wheeled the piano up the road and gave it to her as a gift! Meanwhile, she was spotted (aged 8) by an athletics coach and trained as a 100- metre sprinter, eventually competing at National level. This career ended abruptly due to a knee injury aged 18, which is when (and why) she took up the double bass and actively pursued a career in music.

Source:http://www.chi-chinwanoku.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/chi-chi_HP_new3.jpg

She studied at the Royal Academy of Music and with Franco Petracchi in Rome, and soon found herself in demand internationally.

Chi-chi is the Founder, Artistic and Executive Director of the Chineke! Foundation, which supports, inspires and encourages Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) classical musicians working in the UK and Europe.

The Chineke! Foundation champions change and celebrates diversity in the classical music industry through its two orchestras, the Chineke! Orchestra and Chineke! Junior Orchestra, as well as its educational and outreach work. Ultimately, the Chineke! Foundation aims to give classical BME musicians a platform on which to excel, and by such methods increase the representation of BME musicians in British and European orchestras. More information about the Chineke! Foundation and its work can be found at www.chineke.org.

Chi-chi is a founder member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and held the position of Principal double bass there for 30 years. She is Professor of Double Bass Historical Studies at the Royal Academy of Music, where she was made a Fellow in 1998.

Chi-chi’s range of musical interests have resulted in a broad career performing and recording in a diversity of styles from authentic baroque through to 21st century and new commissions, with many of Europe’s leading chamber orchestras and ensembles. Some of her notable chamber recordings include Schubert’s ‘Trout’ Quintet (recorded three times), and Octet, Beethoven Septet, Hummel Piano quintet and Boccherini Sonatas. Her solo recording of Dittersdorf and Vanhal Concertos with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra; Hyperion CD 67179 received critical acclaim.

In 2012 Barrie Gavin directed a documentary film about Chi-chi’s career, called ‘Tales from the Bass Line’. As a broadcaster, Chi-chi presented BBC Radio 3 Requests for four years, she guests for the TV Proms and was Jury member of BBC 2 TV Classical Star. She presented a two part series for BBC Radio 4 in 2015 which brought to life the stories and music of black composers and musicians from the eighteenth century, whose vivd presence on the classical music scene have slipped through the net!

Chi-chi was also the ‘mentor’ for the 2016 BBC 4 TV series ‘All Together Now, the Great Orchestra Challenge’, showcasing the amazing talent of British amateur orchestras. Chi-chi is a trustee of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, Mayor’s Music Fund, Tertis Foundation a Council Member of the Royal Philharmonic Society. CEO of GV Group (Gate Ventures Group) Scholarship – Closes 25th December 2015

Posted on Updated on

CEO funds scholarship for young student

For many underprivileged young people the thought of attending university, remains just that- a thought. Just as early as August 2015 social media was the natural celebration outlet for those who were successful in achieving their desired results and also a supportive forum for those that didn’t.

For businessman and entrepreneur Tevin Tobun, young people have always been at the forefront of his mind, being the chair of youth organisation Inspirational You, Tevin has been able to play an active part in ensuring underprivileged or disadvantaged young people are given a platform to reach their desired goals.

Along with his organisation GV Group (Gate Ventures), Tobun has decided to put his money where his mouth is, literally. In association with media partners Inspirational You, Tobun will be offering 3 individuals a scholarship towards university fees. Giving less reason for opportunities to be hindered by financial constraints young people may face by the ever increasing tuition fees. When asked why he was funding this scholarship Tobun said “I feel that every individual must play their part in helping the next generation, this is just one of the ways I am able to do this”.

Myx then went on to form his own company formerly known as The Q Entertainment (now Qirv Music) which led to his first releases as a producer and songwriter through Arista / BMG in 2004 for artist Nina Jayne’s hit records “Could’ve Been” and “Anything”. 2 OF 3 Myx then went on to release his first production album “The Q Overdue” independently as a limited edition soft release featuring a number of recording artists and remixes and gaining him more recognition as a talented emerging producer at the time. Myx also received particular support from BBC Radio 1’s Ras Kwame for his promo track “Make It Happen” which was featured record for a few months on the Official BBC Radio 1 website. Since then Myx has worked with a number of artists across genres on compositions, tracks and lyrical content including Haidara (formerly H-Boogie), Wiley, Solange Knowles, Dionne Broomfield, Baby Blue, Bashy, Cleo (formerly Mz. Bratt), Terri Walker and Ghanaian artists Sarkodie, Yaa Pono, Irene Logan and Efya to name a few. May 2009 saw Myx cement his business relationship with EMI Music Publishing inking a deal for singer–songwriter H-Boogie via Qirv Music whose hit record “Love Has Gone” with Dave Armstrong & Redroche is a club dance classic (also vocally produced by Myx Quest). Success continued with the H-Boogie and Get Far single (co produced by Myx Quest) “The Radio” which reached number 1 in the US Billboards Dance Chart in 2010. More recently, in 2014 Myx released his first Gospel / Christian project in the form of an EP titled “Jesus In My Heart Drive”. This features Myx’s production and writing featuring various artists and included the massive single “Creator” featuring The Cokers. Creator was nominated as “Song Of The Year” in the 2014 Prosperity Awards and it’s quirky animation video co-directed by Myx Quest was also nominated as “UK Best Praise & Worship Video” in the 2014 JUMP Release Awards. BUSINESS In July 2004 Myx founded The Q Collective Limited an umbrella company housing The Q Entertainment with support from a number of initiatives including The Princes Trust, Arts Council, One London, Business Enterprise Centre, Portobello Business centre and support from his business mentor Robin Broadhurst CVO, CBE, FRICS. However this did not stop other opportunities coming his way. In 2006, Myx played a pivotal business role in the launch of Music World Entertainment International, owned by none other than Mathew Knowles, manager of the biggest selling girl group in the world Destiny’s Child and father of global Superstar Beyonce Knowles. Developing and pitching the proposal Myx was key to the new venture.

This was to be the international arm of the parent company Music World Entertainment and would focus on territories outside US and Canada. Holding multi faceted roles including Company Director and Operations and Finance Director, Myx played a senior and influential position in the company for over 3 years working between London, Houston and New York regularly. DSCF2740 Myx eventually parted ways with Music World to continue the development of his own business. In order to accommodate the expansion of his businesses and maximize it’s potential Myx then went on to restructure and rebrand “The Q” and formed the Qirv Ventures Limited. Qirv currently houses 4 businesses:

  • 3 OF 3 – Glory Roots (An Online Health & Wellbeing Store) – Apticca Digital (Web Design / Solutions & Graphics Design)
  • Swan & Hyssop (Commercial & Domestic Cleaning)
  • Qirv Music (Record Production House) – From 29th June 2012 – 2nd July 2012

Mr Quest and his team organised and funded the first ever exhibition in Ghana of James Barnor’s works, a highly critically acclaimed Ghanaian photographer who’s works have been features all around the world including Tate Modern London, South African National Museum and Harvard University. The exhibitions titled “Ghana – A Heritage Ever Young” showcased pictures on Ghana’s actual day of independence (6th March 1957), other key political moments and general unique images pre and post independence and included the likes of Kwame Nkrumah, Duchess of York and Mohammed Ali.

The event was attended by numerous key figures and launched at the British Council, Accra. In additional to this Myx is also an accomplished Property Developer and has successfully constructed a number of apartments abroad from bare land to completion available for long or short term let or holiday homes. He also regularly consults as a Business Developer for various businesses and companies including Jubail Specialist Hospital, one of Africa’s leading Private Fertility Hospitals based in Ghana. A sort after public speaker, Myx has sat on many panels in music, business and fashion events including Kulture 2 Couture (funded by Mayor of London, City Hall) along side Hip Hop Music Mogul Damon Dash, Inspirational YOU along side various record company executives and the Ghanaian Londoner’s Young Entrepreneurs’ Programme along side CEO of Oakam Ltd (Frederic Nze), Mayor of Harrow and local councillor for Harrow.

Myx is also a member of the Courvoisier Future 500 that nominates and celebrates talented, inspirational and forward thinking individuals in the UK to be part of the private hub. Despite the obvious wealth of activity, Myx still finds time to dedicate himself as a resident musician of Ruach City Church covering various locations. Headed by Bishop John Francis, Ruach is one of the largest and leading churches in Europe and known for it’s outstanding musicianship and praise & worship. He also played an active role in the initiation of the church’s transition to digital and new media by developing it’s first new media / social network integrated website and currently consults on Ruach’s digital record releases. Qirv Ventures is set to develop greatly under Myx Quest’s leadership and expertise. Through his business and music Myx continues to push and progress forward and is an excellent example of a young successful individual building a legacy brick by brick.
